Hi Jim. The problem has been solved!
We had not seen the footnote on the User Guide page regarding the two modes of usage. The footnote says: "The Javascript method and Server Controls are incompatible and must not both be used on the same page."
That was exactly the problem as we had a server control method also in operation on the same page. Once we changed that to JavaScript also, everything worked,
