Or you can use the Index Manager's Publish tool (which works as a scheduled task)

Which is best? The nice thing about using the Service over doing it programmatically is that Windows handles the Service, starts it for you etc. On the other hand the nice thing about doing it programmatically is that you have more control.
Also the publish tool is great when you need to index on a different machine than the search is running on, eg. in hosted scenarios.
